The name of this magnificent city traces its roots to the Hindu Goddess Mumbadevi which became Bombaim with the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th Century. The British made it the erstwhile Bombay that most current inhabitants still know it as, before it was christened Mumbai in 1995.
