The environment is a major cause of concern these days, not only for environmentalists but also for the common men. When it comes to environment causes, MIAL is not left far behind. MIALites celebrated Environment Day on 5th June, 2009. Celebrations for the event started from 31st of May itself and culminated a week later. It was a huge success, thanks to the tremendous enthusiasm exuded by MIALites.
A young mind is the future of tomorrow - with this thought, the event commenced with a drawing and poster making competition for the children of MIALites, which took place on 31st May. The event, which took place at the arrival terminal of 1B witnessed 17 budding artists. It was a morning well-spent as the young and talented children of MIALites translated their creativity onto the drawing paper with the topic provided by MIAL on the spot. The participants including the winners, were given a gift for participating, thus making the event a success.

A photography competition was organized for MIALites from 31st May to 5th June. The task at hand was to capture the airport environment, events and the overall mood of the Environment Week celebrations. For this purpose, the budding photographers were required to take pictures within the airport premises. Three best photographs were chosen and prizes were given to these winners.
June 5th marked the culmination of this week long environment drive by starting on a green note. The activities implemented included a cleanliness drive and a tree plantation ceremony by Sanjay Reddy, MD- MIAL, along with other senior MIAL officials.
Unquestionably there were more things planned for the day! During the course of this event, a free PUC check camp was organized at terminal 1A and at the multi level car park at international terminal for all private and public vehicles. Cars entering the parking areas of terminals were also presented with car stickers that carried pro environment messages. MIAL displayed true commitment to the cause by handing out potted saplings to all MIALites. Thus, the spirit of Environment Day did not end at the airport, but was extended beyond the airport premises and into the homes of MIALites.
MIAL’s concern for environment was portrayed throughout the airport. Outside the arrival sections of terminals 1A, 1B and international , Environment Awareness stalls were set up where theme books by the NGO Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE), Mumbai were on sale. Banners and standees with environment messages were put up at various locations in and around the airport. Also, as part of the event, bookmarks with environment messages were distributed to all passengers by the terminal management team. Both the domestic and international terminals were decorated with big hand-made chart papers that conspicuously flashed “Your Environment Day Thought”. Passengers took time out to pen down their thoughts about the environment, on these charts.
The true spirit of MIAL’s Environment Week was displayed by each and every MIALite when they observed ‘Green Day’ on 5th June. All MIALites were dressed in green to celebrate this occasion. Winners of Ms Green and Mr Green were chosen by the organizers based on MIALites’ innovation of dressing up in green.
Environment Day celebration at CSIA was a conscious effort by the Operational Health & Safety Department. But as success of an event depends on team work, the day’s celebration accomplished its goal by support from Horticulture, Corporate Communication, HR, Terminal Operations and Landside Operations team. The amount of enthusiasm really kept the momentum going.
The Environment Day was an initiative to shed some light on critical environment related issues, while keeping it fun and joyful. MIAL hopes to embark upon more such initiatives in the future, to help preserve Mother Earth and thank her in our own little way.
